Focussing our spotlight on…..on-line education

Keeping abreast with learning is a constant challenge regardless of age and work background. There are several free palliative care and other on-line courses that can be accessed. Why not give them a go?

Understanding Dementia is a  9 weeks (approx. 27 hours), open to anyone (community, carers, health professionals) Offered by the University of Tasmania’s Wicking Institute. The Understanding Dementia  course covers some simple physiology, person and carer perspectives. Modules are assessed by multiple choice questions.  Content is delivered by short videos.  You register your interest to do the course and then  follow up occurs prior to the next course starting.

Palliative Approach for aged care in the community setting  are guidelines now supported by  4  on-line training modules. Aimed at community carers the training takes around 6-8 hours.

Carers Victoria, “ Give me a break  is an  online education program to help carers understand the benefits and barriers to respite, and provide ideas on how to make best use of their valuable personal time. It is aimed at carers who are isolated as a result of their caring role, and find it hard to access the face to face supports that are available to help them.

The Vet Aware”, course is aimed at community nurses but is appropriate for anyone who has an interest in our veterans and associated mental health issues. 

Palliative Care Curriculum for Undergraduates  PCC4U promotes the inclusion of palliative care education as an integral part of all medical, nursing, and allied health undergraduate and entry to practice training, and ongoing professional development

In July 2014 The Centre for Palliative Care launched Palliative Care- Getting Started  The module provides a detailed introduction for health professionals caring for people and their families living with a life-threatening illness.  The module is evidence based, promotes best practice and includes links to relevant resources. It takes 2-3 hours to complete.

Advance Care Planning Australia offers an ACP on-line course. There is also the opportunity to follow up with an additional communication workshop (workshop has a cost attached).
