Welcome to EMRPCC website

Eastern Metropolitan Region Palliative Care Consortium (EMRPCC) is an alliance of palliative care providers in the Eastern Metropolitan Region (Local Government Areas of Boroondara, Knox, Manningham, Maroondah, Monash, Whitehorse and Yarra Ranges).

Member agencies include: Eastern Health, Eastern Palliative Care, St Vincent’s Hospital (Melbourne), Fernlea House, RDNS and Divisions of General Practice.

The Consortium’s aspiration is that residents of the Eastern Region with a terminal condition, their families and carer’s have access to a high quality palliative care system that fosters innovation and provides coordinated care and support that is responsive to their needs.

There are eight Palliative Care Consortiums funded by the Victorian Department of Health (DH), covering metropolitan and rural Victoria. The Eastern Metropolitan Region has several working groups providing an integrated and coordinated approach to consortium project areas The Consortium will continue to actively develop, strengthen and promote palliative care in the region.

Palliative Support to Residential Services- part 2

We have indicated over the last few weeks that the Eastern Metropolitan Region Palliative Care Consortium is working to increase the level of support provided to Residential Aged Care and Disability Residential Services.
The EMRPCC has recruited a project co-ordinator to assist in the intial steps of establishing the Palliative Support Nurse role.
The "project advisory group" is being finalised and will have its first meeting on 2nd of February.
A number of residential facilities are willing to be involved from the outset with the establishement of the Palliative Support Nurse (PSN).
The Palliative Support Nurse will liaise with primary health, community services,acute health (hospitals) and specialist services that interconnect with residential services.
The role will also support Disability Residential Services, this may be through education planned in conjunction with Disability Services.

What is Palliative Care?

The World Health Organisation (2008) defines Palliative Care as "an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychological and spiritual".
