Title: Donating blood in later life: Who donates blood products in later life in Australia and why?
Abstract: As the Australian population ages the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood (formerly the Blood Service) will increasingly need to rely on middle-aged to older donors to meet future demand for blood products. Although these donors currently contribute significantly to the blood supply, we have little understanding of what motivates adults to donate blood products in mid-later life, as research has primarily focussed on the safety of donation in this age group. In this talk, I present some preliminary findings of a mixed-methods study of blood donors aged 50 and older undertaken with colleagues in the Donor Research team. The talk will include a discussion of the demographics of donors aged 50+ and of typical donor ‘careers’, as well as donor perspectives on becoming and remaining a donor of blood products in mid to later life. Our findings will help to inform strategies for donor recruitment and retention as well as contribute to knowledge about the role of donation as a form of volunteering and an embodied practice, in later life.
