Abstract: The crushing of medication to administer within food or drink (covert administration), is known to be widely practiced in Residential Aged Care (RAC). Evidence about the underlying decision-making that leads RAC staff to administer medication covertly is limited, and the views of residents and staff about this practice are not well understood. An exploratory qualitative study on medication administration and clinical decision-making was conducted with RAC staff, clinical leads/managers, and residents, as part of a larger doctoral thesis. Findings and perspectives specific to covert administration will be presented, particularly around the acceptability of covert administration and the need for standardized clinical guidance to support these clinical decisions. The research casts light on continuing uncertainty about if and when covert administration is permissible, and what authorization and document processes should be followed.
Biography: Stephanie is a Research Officer in the Clinical Gerontology division of NARI. She is also busy finishing the final year of her PhD on a part-time, offsite basis through the University of Auckland, NZ.

This webinar session will overview the practical application of Dr. Hoy's research but he will also pay special attention to the unique challenges posed to memorialisation in the wake of COVID-10 restrictions on mass gatherings. In his research into death-related rituals around the world and throughout history, Bill Hoy has discovered a set of core “anchors” that appear to be commonly held among diverse people groups: significant symbols, gathered community, ritual action, cultural heritage, and transition of the dead. In part because the utilisation of these anchors as media for telling the life story of the deceased, they collectively become instruments in establishing a narrative legacy of the deceased. In turn, this enables survivors to capture a stable post-death identity for their loved one. In addition to utilising these five ritual anchors in planning funerals and memorial services, they can also provide a model for counsellor-assisted ritual creation in psychotherapy.
